Who we are
History
Group 5 has really never been a group of five.
Five creative people made plans to start an advertising
agency and call it Group 5. For three of them,
helping with the name was the only contribution
they made. Bobby Tyler and Sally Cameron pooled
their money and talent in 1982 and took the plunge
(they decided to keep the name Group 5 because
the attorney had already done the paperwork and
it would cost more to change the name).
Started
in a quaint Gainesville-house-turned-office just
off NW 13th St., they bought used furniture
from the school board (one of the tables is still
with us). Sally was the Account Executive, Bobby
the Business Manager, and they hired one other
person as the "Art Department". Not
even being able to afford phones, Sally would
walk to
the corner of NW 16th Ave. and NW 13th St., put
her money in the pay phone and wait for traffic
to stop at the red light to place her client
calls. But, what they lacked financially they
made up
for in creativity! When they finally could afford
phones, Bobby was famous for "calling herself" when
new clients were in the office that Sally wanted
to impress.
Marsha Evans joined Group 5 the following
year as the "Art Department" when
the original art department had to take a medical
leave. It
was her last semester in the first Graphic
Arts
program at Santa Fe Community College, and
Bobby and Sally bribed the head of the department
to
give her a degree even though Marsha was never
allowed to go to another class (too busy, you
see).
Twenty-six years later we have new furniture,
and the used furniture we have we now call "antiques".
We have 3.5 Account Executives, one Assistant
Account Executive, one Business Manager (much
too busy
to call herself), one creative director, two
media buyers, two Graphic Designers, one Web
Designer/Planner
and a partridge in a pear tree (not really,
although we have given a home to the occasional
stray cat).
We also have lots of phones, some of the same
clients Sally called from the pay phone and
own a home-turned-office
two houses down from our original location...stop
in and see us! (but please call first!)
